cringeworthy read: i fell for fake chanel!

Yup. I actually bought fake Chanel thinking it was the real deal.

It all started with my obsession of the month, a Chanel brooch. I think they are so chic and look amazing with a duster coat or blazer but I refuse to pay full price when I can get it second hand! While searching on Poshmark, I noticed sellers price them super high—almost at retail. I ‘liked’ some pretty ones, but they were still priced too high to purchase.

Time went by and I forgot about my obsession of the month. Then, one day, I thought about it again (lol I have issues) and decided to browse the brooches to see if any new ones were added. There it was: a logo brooch in my price range. I noticed the seller had other (active and sold) Chanel items, Gucci, multiple Dior items, Stella McCartney, and more. I thought, ‘OH this person has other nice designer items. The brooch MUST be real’. She has nice stuff in her closet. Plus, I could always open a case/return to seller if I received it and thought it was fake… Ha.

I just got too excited. And purchased. We negotiated for $235. A steal for a Chanel brooch.

But you know what they say, if it seems to be good to be true, it probably is.

It finally came. I tore open the package and the brooch came with the gift box & dust bag. I thought, ‘Oh this has to be legit’. And for some odd reason, I am anal about ‘accepting’ items on Poshmark so I quickly accepted the order. I am not kidding, immediately after I accepted I thought something was not right. The CHANEL letters on the gift box looked a little off … oh and the dust bag felt off too … and come to think of it the actual brooch isn’t great quality? ‘UGH’, I thought. This cannot be real. So I took out my few Chanel boxes I had and compared. Yup. There it was .. definitely different and off. I googled ‘older Chanel boxes’ and googled the different stamp codes, ect. It was too late though, the thought of this being fake was already a 100% possibility.

Before I contacted Poshmark to get my money back, I decided to authenticate it online. I went on and submitted photos and close ups of the stamp. Of courseeee it came back undetermined. I tried another website for authentication: Lollipuff. Lo and behold it came back counterfeit. I felt like such a sucker and so upset. I was also upset at the seller. Who does that!

I thought about messaging her and cursing her out, but that’s just not me. I had to reel it in.

I politely asked her where she got the brooch and she told me it was 100% authentic and was from Tradesy. Betch, it is not authentic.

This is taken from Tradesy’s website: Tradesy uses advanced technology to automatically detect and remove any replica items listed on our site, with 99.7% accuracy – so nearly every item you see on Tradesy is authentic.

So, not sure what the truth is – either Tradesy missed this one or she is lying. Either way, I was just angry I was fooled.

Well, I wasn’t going to let this side and I contacted Poshmark for a refund. I waited and waited. It took a painful week and a half (& emailing 2 more times) for them to initially get back to me. They asked for more photos, and a couple days later after that they asked me to send in the brooch. They said if it was fake they would refund me my original payment.

Poshmark also said they made a huge exception and need to open a case next time the item is not as described. It is difficult to request a return for something after ‘accepting’ an item and releasing the earnings to the seller.

After a painful three weeks later, Poshmark determined it was in fact fake & I would be refunded.

This was definitely a lesson for me and now I will be EXTRA cautious when buying off Poshmark or any resale website for that matter if it doesn’t 100% authenticate. By the way, Poshmark will authenticate over $500, so I don’t want to scare you out of buying any luxury items on there. Just be careful :). I know I will!!!

It’s a little embarrassing, but I don’t want it to happen to anyone else because it truly felt sucky. If you had a similar experience, I’d love to hear from you. Leave me a comment!

  1. Oh no! So sorry to hear that happened! They make some fakes so good now that it can be very difficult to spot the difference. Glad that Poshmark worked with you and that they are giving you a refund! You got quite lucky there.

  2. Omg what a bummer! So great Poshmark helped out- so hard to know which sellers to trust with high end stuff! Now the search continues for another one….lol
